A CLEAR AND STRONG NO to vivisection
8th Last September the European Parliament passed a directive against vivisection . The new rules would offer itself as a step forward from the arrangements in 1986.
a new test was needed in light of the Lisbon Treaty, which sets the objectives for a modern and advanced not only respect for the environment, but also for animals. Article 13 of Title II, in fact, explicitly calls on Member States to respect "animal welfare" (cd animal welfare) as "sentient beings". The text was released by the Parliamentary committees, however, represents a compromise in quality.
On the one hand it is evident from many felt was the need for a new discipline that, for example, would put restrictions with regard to the possibility of testing on certain species (eg some primates ), on the other the text - which arrives with a delay of years as reported dall'Eurogroup for animals, which includes also the LAV - prevents individual States to determine a law more rigorous than for animals. We believe that the European Parliament should be the driving force for change and not a ceiling that limits. Regarding the substance of the directive was to highlight the key element of animal testing as a last resort and not the admission of homeless animals in the experiments rather than practices of exhaustion, analgesics and other interventions without procedures unacceptable and far from scientific progress (in degrading these procedures we also included the methods of Islamic ritual slaughter should not provide for the sedation of the animal). At the same time we hope that within the EU countries take life a process of substantial change in attitude and real respect for the most vulnerable human beings effectively.
In Italy and in Europe a bipartisan movement contrary to the Directive is making its voice heard. MEPs have voted against it from all sides, by Christian Muscardini of PDL, with Sonia Alfano IDV, Francesca Balzani of PD.
Minister Brambilla wrote an appeal with Senator Umberto Veronesi and eminent personalities of the intellectual world and culture. We
advisers Casalecchio and we will keep in touch with the League antivivisection national and provincial level and support any draft amendments to the Directive to suggest that the LAV and the Government to bring in the European press. We undertake also organizing a public event to raise awareness and information on the subject.
We think that these words are the least sensitive measure institutional framework for a municipality like ours in the protection of animals and where there is a special office dedicated to their rights.
